   Stellar Astrophysics



COROT
    Our team, in collaboration with the other members of the Belgian Asteroseismology Group, is strongly involved in the preparation of the COROT space mission.

    The COROT satellite, whose launch is planned late 2004, has two main objectives:
- detection and study of stellar oscillations (stellar seismology)
- search for extrasolar planets.

    Several fields of astrophysics are involved in the preparation of this mission. The following working groups have been set up:
- stellar seismology
- extrasolar planets
- complementary ground based observations
- additional programmes

CO-I

Arlette NOELS

Arlette Noels id Co-I in the "asteroseismology" working group.

Her responsibilites are defined as follows:
- computation of theoretical stellar models fitting as closely as possible the targets of the COROT core programme
- computation of adiabatic frequencies for these models

This research is made in collaboration with Richard Scuflaire, Anne Thoul and Marc-Antoine Dupret.

Richard SCUFLAIRE

Richard Scuflaire id Co-I in the "asteroseismology" working group.

His responsibilites are defined as follows:
- inverse problem (determination of stellar properties from COROT asteroseismological data)
- influence on mixing, especially on convection
- non-adiabatic analysis

This research is made in collaboration with Marc-Antoine Dupret, Anne Thoul and Benjamin Vatovez.

Pierre MAGAIN

Pierre Magain is Co-I in the "ground-based observations" working group.

His responsibilites are defined as follows:
- high precision determination of the chemical composition and fundamental properties (effective temperatures, surface gravities) of target stars in COROT core programme
- spectroscopic analysis of stars showing evidence of extrasolar planets in order to derive their chemical composition and to estimate their age

Conny AERTS

Conny Aerts, from the KU-Leuven, is Co-I in the "asteroseismology" working group.

Her responsibilites are defined as follows:
- identification of oscillation modes in target stars of COROT core programme
- asteroseismology of B-stars, namely Cephei stars and SPB stars detected by COROT.

This research is made in collaboration with Maryline Briquet and the researchers from the KU-Leuven.

She also proposes an additional programme consisting in detecting g-modes of non radial oscillations in hot stars observed by COROT.
