Comet Hale-Bopp

Pictures by Philippe Demoulin

Picture taken at the menhirs of Oppagne (Durbuy), on March 9, 1997 at about 5h25 UT+1.
Incidentally, these menhirs have been erected around 2000 - 2500 B.C., i.e. about at the time of the previous apparition of the comet (around 2210 B.C.).
The period of the comet before the current apparition was 4206 years; the next passage will happen in 2380 years.  The period has been modified following a "close" (115 million km) approach to Jupiter in April 1996.
Lens: 70 mm at f/3.5.  Exposure time about 1 minute.  Film Fujicolor 1600 ASA.

From today to April 10, the comet Hale-Bopp will be circumpolar in Belgium, i.e. it will no more set during that period.
