RESEARCH AREAS

STELLAR ASTRONOMY

  • Preparation of the PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) space mission: development of methods for the determination of the non-seismic stellar parameters (effective temperature, chemical composition, ...).
  • PI of the B-fields in OB stars survey (BOB) whose aim is to investigate the incidence rate and properties of magnetic fields in massive stars.
  • Involvement in the Gaia-ESO survey: determination of the parameters and chemical abundances of the OB stars observed in the course of the survey (especially in the open clusters NGC 3293 and Trumpler 14).
  • Preparation of the Gaia space mission: development of softwares for the determination of the orbital elements of double-lined binary systems (eccentricity, mass function, etc.) based on the radial velocities of both components.
  • Study of the chemical composition of nearby, massive stars: discovery of phenomena not predicted by theoretical models, in particular a nitrogen excess at the surface of slow rotators possibly arising from magnetic processes.
  • Constraints on the neon abundance of the nearby intestellar gas based on massive stars: evidence that this element in the Sun is likely not abundant enough to solve the discrepancy between the predictions of solar interior models and the results of helioseismology.
  • Preparation of the CoRoT (Convection Rotation and planetary Transits) space mission: characterisation of the massive, pulsating stars observed by the satellite and determination of the stellar parameters needed for theoretical modelling (temperature, abundances, etc.).
  • Optical classification of the X-ray sources detected in the course of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) survey conducted by the ROSAT satellite: evidence for a population of young stars probably arising from a recent (within the last 100 million years) stellar formation burst in the solar neighbourhood.
  • Determination of the photospheric abundances of binary stars strongly emitting in X rays (RS CVn systems): discovery of chemical peculiarities likely related to their very strong chromospheric activity (see figure). This is well illustrated by the case of oxygen (see figure).
  • Study of the large-scale structure of the winds of massive stars: indication that anisotropic outflows are ubiquitous in OB stars and can also be, in a few cases, found in the more evolved stars of the Wolf-Rayet type. The fact that the pattern of variability is strikingly different on long timescales (see figure) hints at a link with some kind of photospheric activity, e.g. magnetic processes and/or pulsations operating at the stellar surface.
  • Identification of the optical counterpart to the X-ray source X1908+075 discovered by the RXTE satellite (see figure): one of the few systems known in the Galaxy made up of an O supergiant associated to a neutron star (see figure).
